Miniview: Dawson works to complete the new Kimpton Alexis, Seattle

In a recent survey of the ‘Top Ten’ of Seattle hotels carried out by a local newspaper, Dawson Design had designed the top five. In company with Andrea Dawson I had a look around the newly refurbished hotel, now operated as a part of the Kimpton group. Although still being completed the hotel had 100% occupancy as the politicians moved into town selling themselves in advance of the up coming presidential primaries.

The hotel is housed in a historic block of buildings fronting First Avenue with its entrance opposite the (also Dawson designed) Hotel 1000. Purchased at a price of around $320,000 per key, and increase in the rooms has given the owners an immediate return. As part of the replanning of the interior space the Dawson studio has increased the number of rooms by approximately 10% over the original, whilst retaining the original windows which are such a strong part of historic buildings such as this.

Rooms show Dawson’s now familiar excellent handling of colour, texture and pattern. Innovative touches include a lamp made using a sculptural head bought on E-bay, cast and used as the lamp body. Original art is used through arrangements with Seattle galleries. Snagging was being completed, and the last of the millwork (joinery to a Brit) was being installed as these photographs were being taken.
