With a little encouragement I was able to fumble my way through the iMac’s operating system (like 94% of the population I am pc, not a Mac wearer), and using Skype and the built in video camera, I was able to talk to the City Inn technical Director in Cardiff responsible for this system.
The system not only allows access to the web, it also has a full range of 38 TV channels, 23 radio stations and DVD etc. all at the touch of a button on a single controller. Using the BBC’s iTV (BBCi) it is possible to call up the last seven days TV programmes free of charge, and the hotel contains a CD library for guest use.
The philosophy of City Inn is to make all these services part of an all inclusive room rate. As the cost of providing the internet link to the hotels 460 bedrooms works out about 3p per night, this shames those London Hotels that charge guests anything up to £30 a night for a link to the internet.
