Hotel Design: Pod Chain Expansion goes nitenite Berlin

In Seydelstrasse 28, 10117, Berlin is an office building undergoing the transformation into the second of the nitenite Cityhotels. The first hotel in the company opened in Birmingham England in April 2006, causing a stir with its windowless pod bedrooms. Views outside the hotel were transmitted from the roof of the building onto 42" plasma screens in the bedrooms.

The Birmingham 'cabins' are each 6.8 square metres and the success of the first ever nitenite and first hotel of its kind and the positive way in which it has been received by the general public are spurring the expansion to a target of 30 hotels over the next 5 years. The company spokesperson says:
"This may seem very ambitious but we are able to do this due to the nature of our unique concept. Our rooms are designed in the style of luxury yacht cabins; compact, contemporary, and stylish rooms. They are pre-fabricated off site and brought to site as ‘rooms on wheels’, simply being slotted and stacked into the space and after some plastering and snagging, away we go!

Once we have identified the site, progress is made very quickly and we can get a hotel up and running in 6-12 months depending on the site. We wanted to offer guests affordable style and comfort – luxury for less. Other hotel groups have stripped out all of the ‘good bits’ and taken the room back to basics in order to enable them to charge a low rate. This ‘no frills’ approach is not what nitenite is about and we have created a unique boutique cityhotel, rather than a mediocre budget offering. Rather than strip the room of its charming and interesting features, we have condensed the size of the room, ensuring that everything in it is stylish, cutting edge and efficient. The idea behind the concept was that we wanted to offer guests a stylish place to stay in key city centre locations at an affordable price.

The other thing that makes us stand out from the crowd is that nitenite has its own personality. This quirky little product has its very own fun and cheeky persona and this can be seen throughout all of our marketing, in-house literature and soon to be very much demonstrated in our brand new website being launched soon".

The new development is the first of the planned sites and the company is also looking at sites in Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool as well as New York, and Berlin.
