News - 8th May 2003Battersea Power Station
During WW2 the power station was a clear landmark for the bombers of the Luftwaffe during their raids on London. It was know as the Woodbines to aircrews. At the time the building, the largest brick built structure in Europe with an estimated 61 million bricks, had only two chimneys. From the air it looked as if two cigarettes were being proffered from a pack, and the power station became nicknamed after a well-known brand of cancer stick from the era. However the power station avoided coming to a Wagnerian end, surviving with its historic interiors intact.
