Lano Is the Jewel in the Crowne

Lano Carpets, European manufacturer of quality carpets for both domestic and contract locations, has delivered yet another example of flooring excellence within one of Belgium’s most prestigious hotels.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel is situated in the heart of the charming and romantic city of Bruges that is often called the Venice of the North.

Conveniently located on the magnificent Burg Square, adjacent to the historic town hall and Chapel of the Holy Blood, the hotel has 96 rooms and has undergone a total renovation that has been recently completed.

With focus on a whole new colour palette, new furniture, new floor coverings and new technology, the Crowne Plaza, Bruges is now a hotel fit for 21st Century city-goers, thanks to BABO that developed and created new interior concepts and which coincidentally also owns the hotel.

At just 16 years old, the modern façade hides touches of old Bruges and a visit to the cellar will reveal the foundations of Saint Donatiuss Church of the 12th Century and a city wall of the 10th Century. These remains have been integrated into the new building and some spaces have even been converted into multi-functional rooms. Two adjacent 14th Century buildings have also undergone the same treatment becoming five spacious rooms that use the visibility of walls and beams to add ambience to this otherwise thoroughly modern accommodation.

As there were such a variety of spaces on offer, the flexibility of Lano Carpets proved the ideal solution for rooms, suites and corridors within the hotel. With some meeting rooms within the cellar space fitted with a high quality Axminster weave 80% wool 20% nylon carpet from the Belgian manufacturer during 2006, BABO Interior Design decided to use the expertise and flexibility of Lano Carpets for the majority of the remaining areas within the Crowne Plaza.

The resilience of the Axminster construction had proved itself within the cellar in a bespoke combination of red, brown and beige colourway, so within bedrooms, designers created a carpet with red squares outlined with taupe, taking inspiration from the cellar rooms, but with a twist to make a soothing floor for the bedroom.

In order to create differentiation in spaces, the designers chose a combination of pastel inspired tones with warm shades throughout the two restaurants, while carpets within the suites of the hotel were created in a beige tone with a subtle dot motif to give a true sense of luxury.

Then throughout the corridors of the hotel, the same red, brown and beige colourway in a linear design provided continuity in the same Axminster weave and 80% wool 20% polyamide blend.

Dirk Feys, Head of Design for Lano Carpets, summarises the project:

“With an building such as the Crowne Plaza, flexibility with continuity is key within the floor covering. With flexibility, rooms can be easily segmented, meeting rooms become clearly meeting rooms, bedrooms clearly bedrooms and corridors are instantly recognisable. Continuity comes in the form of the bespoke colour palette used for the project. With BABO Interior Design using the same tones in all areas, but in a multitude of different patterns, the hotel has a real sense of unity despite the different ‘zones’ and their corresponding patterns.”
