Kimptons Nine Zero, Boston, Massachusetts

The new bedrooms are classically designed, not terribly trendy but, again, well tailored. They are sophisticated and European in feel, perhaps fitting in what was described to me as the most English of American cities (although quite how it is English - Irish, Italian, Spanish yes but the English are 'enemy'- oops there I go again, 'relax') . Rooms are generously sized and have a good working desk that for once has not had the gas lift disabled.

Gas lift is frequently disabled because the hotel wants it to count as an armchair in the room, regardless of the fact that the lack of elevation can leave a guest typing under their chin. Arms bash the underside of the desk so the gas lift is disabled rendering it useless as a task chair - but not here, where the desk is so robustly designed and guest functionality has been given priority.

Rooms are well fitted with circular armoires reminiscent of those Olga Polizzi introduced in 2000 to her first new build Rocco Forte Hotel . There is a certain similarity between the two chains, with both focussed on providing comfort and guest satisfaction through design and service. Both too use high quality finishes and have an eye for detail in the design, and both are at the top of their markets.

The restaurant is both funky and stylish, with cowhide seats (always reminding me of a certain computer maker) mixed in with high style chairs and well thought out variety in the table arrangements. Situated on the first floor the stag horn light fitting is almost a reminder of hunting from early colonial days, and the views from the window are of the historic graveyard of my countrymen and some early US citizens too (steady, 'relax'). The space splits into two either side of a glass and chrome bar fitting, lounge on one side, restaurant dining area on the other in an arrangement that seems to successfully blend bar and restaurant in a fashionable way. The whole has its own street entrance with its own version of the stag horn chandelier. There is also a stylish private dining room.
