Use and Abuse of Colour 2

The second consideration in using colour is the visual experience known as simultaneous contrast. This is the physical phenomenon where placing one colour against another alters the perception of both. All to do with the reaction of the rods and cones in the eye, this can become further complicated by use of complimentary colours or colours of a similar tonality.

Often designers can achieve the strongest results in dramatic terms by playing to the strengths of individual colours using secondary colour that 'set them off' or using them as accents in pattern. This has been successfully used, for example, by Rezidor in placing their brand identity as colour into wallpaper designs, as I show here.

Using a strong colour such as red in tandem with neutral or non-colour such as black or white, can also achieve dramatic effect, as the first Andazshowed.

In this piece I have just scratched the surface of how colour can be used, and how it can be made to work. It should also be remembered that for those with visual handicaps, colour can create a world of danger, giving the illusion of steps, changing space perception and generally creating hazards. Many of us develop these disabilities as we get older so this is not necessarily a small minority of guests.

Truly in using colours designers should be aware of the need for an intelligent eye. Remeber "less is more".
