From the restaurants it is possible to watch the watchers – not people watchers inthe lobby, shielded as it is by the double sided bar and the maitre d’ desk, but the airplane watchers on the lawns outside the hotel through the large picture windows. The runway is parallel to the hotel across the perimeter road, and despite anti-terrorist shields that obscure the views, both guests and the external watchers remain fascinated by the stream of aircraft that land at Heathrow with scant minutes between them.

The restaurant is well designed, with different areas being both set up in different ways to differentiate, but also being split by level changes, screens and the use of the buffet facility. Staffing has been thought out and the positioning of the waiter stations arranged so that service is efficient in an area that not only services the 750 bedrooms but also the conference facilities.
Competing company Rezidor regards airport hotels as the most profitable locations. It is no coincidence that some of the largest UK hotels are located at its airports (the Radisson at Manchester is currently being extended). Heathrow has generated a whole range of mini-conferences and one day events at the hotels on the airport fringe as the connectivity allows for delegates to fly in from anywhere in Europe in the morning and then fly home again at the end of the day.
"Underinvestment in tourism infrastructure has long been a notable policy of successive British governments, and nowhere is it more evident than at crowded Heathrow and its immediate environs."
Busy public areas from this business traffic add to the buzz from having 750 bedrooms with very high occupancy levels, and one wonders why there aren’t mega hotels here as there are in Las Vegas. It is notable that there is no really large conference centre in London capable of hosting multiple thousand delegate conferences, and that compared to the 6,000+ bedroom hotels with conference facilities in Las Vegas, this major tourist city is well under provisioned. Indeed it is often said that there are more conference spaces available in Frankfurt than in the whole of the UK! Underinvestment in tourism infrastructure has long been a notable policy of successive British governments, and nowhere is it more evident than at crowded Heathrow and its immediate environs.
